ACTIVEXPERTS NETWORK MONITOR 5.5 RELEASE NOTES

INTRODUCTION

ActiveXperts Network Monitor 5.5 is the newest version of the ActiveXperts Network Monitor product. The mission of the product is to maximize the reliability of your production servers and applications through the automatic detection and correction of problems and issues. The product runs as a service on the Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 platform. The ActiveXperts Network Monitor 5.5 configuration database is compatible with all previous versions of the product.

WHAT'S NEW IN ACTIVEXPERTS NETWORK MONITOR 5.5

- Checks -

  • CPU, Directory Size, Disks, File Size, Memory Usage and Printer checks - These checks are now implemented as a built-in checks (no VBScript), and allow configuration of credentials other than the default service credentials. The VBScript equivalents still exists;
  • CPU - multiprocessor support;
  • The File Existence check and File Size check are now combined as one single check;
  • The Process Running check and Process Memory check are now combined as one single check;
  • Humidity - New check to monitor humidity on different probes. It requires a Sensatronics EM1 Environmental Monitor device;
  • Wetness - New check to check water leaks on different probes. It requires a Sensatronics EM1 Environmental Monitor device.

- VBScript -

  • Redesigned VBScript configuration dialog - The redesigned VBScript configuration dialog allows the user to create new VBScript files and functions using the Network Monitor manager application. It also allows management of files and functions. VBScript function comments are now displayed in the function setup dialog. Additionally, function samples can be loaded instantly.
  • New VBScript functions - Many new VBScript functions included for various purposes;
  • VBScript access to remote servers - VBScript functions now have equivalents that require two extra parameters: Login and Password. It allows accessing servers on different domains or servers that are not part of a domain.

- User Interface -

  • Adding new rules is much faster now in large configurations (> 500 rules);
  • Column widths are preserved the next time you start the Manager application;
  • Advanced Quick Configuration Wizard - the Quick Configuration Wizard has more advanced samples; you can now select/deselect samples;
  • Web Interface doesn't show the 'Processing' icon anymore when an item is processed at the time the web view was generated; instead, the last known result is displayed. This gives a better overview of the monitored items.

- Reports and Logging -

  • The default log database is now called NetworkMonitor.mdb (in earlier versions is was called Log.mdb). You can still use your own database (MS Access, MS SQL, Oracle, ...) for logging;
  • There is a new field in all reports and logs called 'Data'. 'Data' is the actual value of a monitoring event. For instance, when dis space is monitored and the actual disk space is 500MB, the 'Data' field holds '500';

INSTALLATION AND UPGRADE

- Installation -

- Upgrade -

Upgrading from a previous version should be done in the following way:

  • Make a backup of the current configuration - although not really necessary, it's a good practice to do so;
  • Uninstall all 'ActiveXperts Network Monitor Manager' application on the PCs that have the Manager application installed. Use the 'Add/Remove Programs' applet in the Control Panel to start the Uninstall
  • Uninstall the 'ActiveXperts Network Monitor' software on the monitoring server. Use the 'Add/Remove Programs' applet in the Control Panel to start the Uninstall;
  • Install the 'ActiveXperts Network Monitor' software on the monitoring server;
  • Install the 'ActiveXperts Network Monitor Manager' application on the PCs of the operators.
